The fencing of the area where the Vlora Airport is being built has been completed and thousands of migratory birds now wander in a "new life" between the barbed wire.

According to the Albanian authorities, the Vlora Airport will complete the works within this year and will be operational in the summer of 2025, bringing a new endangered reality for the birds in this area of ??the Narta Lagoon.

Albanian authorities ignored a Berne Convention request last September to halt work on the airport until a new environmental impact assessment was carried out.

Several environmental organizations are conducting a legal battle in the Administrative Court of Tirana where they have sued a series of government institutions for the procedures followed for the airport construction project and the start of the works.

The government has declared for its part that the airport is of primary importance for the tourist development of this region and the area of ??Akarnia, where it is being built, includes an area which during the communist period was used for the landing of military planes.

In the Narta Lagoon, covered in part with the pink-orange color that is created in the nearby salt flats, flamingos still move undisturbed, while migratory birds try more and more to get inside the airport fence.

The Vjosë-Nartë Protected Landscape is the second largest wetland in Albania and an area where conservation is of worldwide interest as it is home to 26 Globally Endangered species./VOA
