After heavy defeat in parliamentary elections/ Orban re-elected as head of

Former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban was re-elected today as leader of the right-wing Fidesz party, despite the party's heavy defeat in the April 12 parliamentary elections.

The Tisza party, led by Peter Magyar, won the election, ending Orbán's 16 years of uninterrupted rule. With a two-thirds majority in parliament, Tisza has the power to repeal constitutional changes passed during Fidesz's rule.

Following the election defeat, Orban's political future was thrown into doubt, with some of his former allies publicly calling for his retirement from politics. This is considered the first open challenge to his leadership since he took office as prime minister in 2010.

However, there was no other candidate for the party leadership at the Fidesz congress. Out of 737 delegates, 729 voted in favor of Orbán's re-election as leader.

In his speech before the vote, he declared that he has no intention of retiring from politics.

"I never give up," he said, taking full responsibility for the election defeat.

He stressed that Fidesz has been an "excellent governing party" for 16 years, but now needs to reform to become an effective opposition and be ready to return to power in the future. /CNA
