The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, has reacted to the passing of American Congressman Eliot Engel.

In a post on social networks, Berisha states that Engel was one of the most powerful voices of the cause of Kosovo Albanians, their freedom and independence.

The chief democrat described the congressman as "a dear friend of democracy in Albania from its first steps and onwards ." Berisha conveyed his condolences to the congressman's family, friends and relatives.

Dear friends,

Former US congressman, former chairman of the US Congressional Foreign Affairs Committee, Eliot Engel, one of the greatest, most beloved and most precious friends of the Albanian nation, even in our most difficult times, closed his eyes forever.

This is a great loss not only for the American nation, which Congressman Engel served with great dignity in 16 legislatures for more than three decades as its representative in the US Congress, but it is also a great loss for the Albanian nation.

Eliot Engel, from the early 1990s until the end of his life, was one of the most powerful voices for the just cause of the Albanians of Kosovo, their freedom and independence. He was one of the main promoters of transforming the just cause of Kosovo's freedom and independence into a priority issue of foreign policy of the US Congress and the government.

But Congressman Eliot Engel was also a dear friend of democracy in Albania from its earliest days onwards. He was a valued supporter of free voting, Euro-Atlantic integration and Albania’s membership in NATO. Congressman Engel was a strong advocate in the US Congress for the freedoms and national rights of Albanians in North Macedonia, Montenegro, Presevo and elsewhere in the world.

I have been fortunate to meet this distinguished friend many times since 1992; to host him in Albania and to meet him in Washington and New York, having his precious support and collaborating closely on matters of foreign policy and common interest.

Expressing my greatest respect and boundless gratitude for everything he did for the Albanians, this distinguished man of the American nation, I convey my deepest condolences to the family, friends and relatives of Congressman Engel, as well as to the authorities of his country.

I pray to God that his good soul finds the peace he deserves. Amen. / CNA
