The Minister of Education, Evis Kushi, has explained the details of the decision taken today at the government meeting regarding holding hostage the diplomas of Medical students for a total of 5 years.
Kushi said that the students who will start their studies at the University of Medicine will have to sign an agreement where it is stated that they have a condition of compulsory employment for 5 years, but this figure changes for current students.
The minister clarified that the medical students from the first to the fourth year will have to work in Albania for 3 years, while those who are in the fifth and sixth year will have to work for 2 years with the obligation to withdraw the diploma, otherwise they will pay the real cost of their studies in Albania.
Kushi underlines that it is foreseen that if for one year the students cannot find a job in the relevant institutions in Albania, they can withdraw the diploma.
" Student candidates, before enrolling in the university, will sign an agreement with the University of Medicine, the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education to commit 5 years in Albania to the institutions in Albania. For the students who are this year, an agreement will be signed where they sign that the students from the first to the fourth year must work for 3 years and from the fourth to the sixth year 2 years.
So this is their obligation. Candidates have no choice, they must sign this agreement, other students can choose between two alternatives. They must contribute to the country because the needs for doctors must be met.
If the obligation to engage in institutions is not fulfilled for one year, they can withdraw the diploma. That doesn't happen, but it's part of the deal nonetheless. I want to emphasize that this draft law will be presented to the Assembly with an accelerated procedure because in August those graduates who want to study medicine must take the relevant exam." - said Kushi./ CNA
