Snake and insect bites/ Doctor Xhelilaj for CNA: Zero cases in children this

Bites in children from poisonous animals this year have been zero, while last year there were only four such cases, which were successfully treated. This fact is confirmed for CNA TV by Gent Xhelilaj, a doctor at the general pediatrics department at the QSUT. Xhelilaj gives some advice on how to react in such cases and how to treat them afterwards.

"It is not necessary to catch the snake or cut off its head, as it has been seen that even after cutting off the head, accidental bites from the snake can occur. Also, the person who comes to help should also look at the general condition of the child, i.e. whether there is systemic toxicity or not, and make a preliminary assessment of the wound, to what extent the wound is in condition. Today, anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen or naproxen are no longer recommended, as there is a risk that they will interfere with the blood and with the disorders caused by the snake venom. Therefore, it is preferable to use opioid analgesics called, such as tramadol. Some traditions that have remained, such as cutting the wound and sucking the venom, must be rigorously eliminated. It should be presented as soon as possible to the nearest center specialized in snake bites," advises doctor Xhelilaj.

According to Xhelilaj, people with high risk factors are those who are allergic to insect bites. Here he mentions bee stings, where the person should carry adrenaline with them at all times.

"People who know they have a bee allergy, it is a medical emergency where first of all the person himself must circulate with an adrenaline syringe in his pocket for his entire life and at the first moment of a bee sting, he must give it to himself. This person should be considered an allergic shock," said Xhelilaj.

In all cases, doctors urge citizens to seek medical assistance at Health Centers, without waiting for their condition to worsen. /CNA
