Former German ambassador passes away in Albania

Former German ambassador Werner Daum has passed away at the age of 82.

According to media reports, Daum was found dead in the hotel room where he was staying.

Daum had been in Albania for days, where he also participated in the tributes in honor of the martyr of democracy Josif Budo in Kavaja.

During a media interview in recent days, Daum emotionally recounted his extraordinary commitment against the communist regime, admitting that he had acted alone against his government to open the doors to freedom for Albanians.

He served as ambassador from 1987 to 1990.

Daum opened the doors of the German embassy to Albanians seeking hope and freedom, defying the orders of his government and becoming a powerful support for the Albanian people in one of the most difficult periods in their history./ CNA
