The former prime minister and historical leader of the Socialist Party, Fatos Nano celebrates his 71st birthday today.

Former Prime Minister Fatos Nano is hospitalized after health complications in his lungs.

He continues to be hospitalized since August 29, but it is reported that he is in good health.

We remind you that Fatos Nano has been Prime Minister of Albania three times and for 14 years and 1 month the chairman of the Socialist Party.

Fatos Nano began his political career in 1991 after being elected Secretary of the Council of Ministers and then Prime Minister in the Transitional Government, which was established to prepare the country for the transition to a market economy and democratic system. That same year he was elected chairman of the Socialist Party.

For 5 years, from March 1992 to March 1997, Nano was in prison on charges of corruption and abuse of office by the court.

Fatos Nano was elected as prime minister after the SP's victory in the early elections of 1997, but in September 1998 he resigned after the assassination of the former founder of the DP, Azem Hajdari.

Nano became Prime Minister again in July 2002. On July 3, 2005, the Socialist Party lost the elections and the majority in Parliament. On September 1, 2005, Fatos Nano resigned as chairman of the Socialist Party, finally leaving active politics.

He tried to return to the 2007 presidential race, but did not have the support of his successor at the head of the SP, Edi Rama. Most of the opposition deputies led by the Socialist Party did not support his candidacy and boycotted the election of the president.

As a member of the Albanian parliament, Nano has served the area of ??Kuçova, Tepelena and Saranda./ CNA
