Ditmir Bushati at Public Square/ Discussion on the transition of the world order
Lina Benabdallah/ Ditmir Bushati

In the latest episode of Public Square, Ditmir Bushati discusses with Lina Benabdallah, an academic at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University.

The discussion focused on transformations of the world order, rivalry between great powers, and the impact of these developments on the Global South.

The conversation addressed the question of whether the world is facing a shift in hegemony or a deeper transformation of the international order itself built after 1945.

The weakening of the Western consensus, the challenges to multilateral institutions such as the UN, the IMF and the World Bank, as well as the critical perceptions coming from African, Central Asian and Latin American countries on the current functioning of the global system were analyzed.

A special focus was given to the strategic narratives that China is constructing, especially in the Global South. It was emphasized that China combines political discourse with concrete infrastructure investments through the “Belt and Road” initiative, offering a perceived alternative to traditional development models promoted by international financial institutions.

The discussion also addressed the concept of “debt diplomacy,” China’s strategic interests in critical minerals and global infrastructure, and the dilemmas facing developing countries when faced with the pressure of choosing between great powers. From the perspective of the Global South, a bipolar US–China configuration is seen not as a guarantee of stability, but as a risk for the return of a Cold War-like logic.

In conclusion, possible scenarios for the next decade were discussed, where the international order is expected to remain fragmented, with the rise of regional alternatives and internal challenges in the West that directly affect the sustainability of the multilateral system. /CNA
