Other details have come to light from the ships that left from the Port of Durrës towards Thailand, which allegedly contained toxic waste.

The international media " Bloomberg " has contacted the Department of Industrial Affairs of Thailand regarding this matter.

The Department of Industrial Affairs of Thailand has replied that it has contacted the Albanian authorities regarding the cargo of 800 tons, on two ships.

According to "Bloomberg", the Albanian authorities have stated that "they were not notified and did not give their consent for these shipments".

The two ships that departed from the Port of Durrës turn out to be of the "Maersk" company.

The latter, in a reaction, has stated that two of its cargo ships have been booked by another shipping line to transport containers originating from Albania.

"Maersk" has emphasized that it was not aware of the contents of the containers, otherwise it would have rejected the request of the other line.

"Due to speculation regarding the contents of these containers, 'Maersk' will deliver the containers to the shipping line that booked them and is responsible for the containers in question," spokeswoman Summer Shi said.

The companies that have contracted the two ships to transport the containers have not yet been identified.

It should be noted that Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries have faced illegal shipping of waste, ranging from contaminated plastics to industrial and electronic waste, which can be laden with toxins.

Under the United Nations' Basel Convention, a global pact signed by many developed economies, countries must consent to waste going their way.

But Thailand has not given its consent for the waste sent from the Port of Durrës./ CNA
