The Municipality of Tirana, on Monday, refused to convene the Municipal Council, something urgently requested by the opposition, to ensure accountability, related to the affair of the directors and associates of Veliaj. In an interview for CNA, the democratic Municipal Councilor, Ilir Alimehmeti, stated that the arguments given by the socialists were baseless.

"There is no greater urgency than this scandal in Tirana. However, from April 5 to the 22, it took the leadership of the Municipal Council 17 days to review it. In this respect, seeing that this request was not supported by the Party Socialists, we gathered 7 different forces and submitted 21 signatures in the morning before the afternoon meeting. It was practically the same request, but with 21 signatures. They asked for time to consider the same request. only this time he had the necessary signatures."

Alimehmeti presented the demands of the opposition, stressing that it is necessary to carry out an external audit of the municipality.

"Request for external audit, one of the large independent international companies, to see all the financial activities of the municipality, at the time when there was no investigation by KLSH, in order not to overlap elements. We asked for an investigative commission. Only one is enough advisor to ask for this, but they didn't want to put this on the agenda either."

The right-wing councilor shared details of what the next steps will be taken by the opposition.

"We have the task of informing foreign diplomacy in Albania, how information is blocked, how the right to the Council meeting is not given. There are not even minutes of voting on draft decisions. Maybe these foreign diplomats are unclear about what is happening with corruption .

For the first time, we have a minister for local government. We will address this ministry, let them know that the Council does not work. We must do our duty. There were paths that they followed to steal public funds, paths that we must close, so that a Tusha, Qato, Molla, or Veliaj does not come to us."

As for the protests, Alimehmeti emphasized that it is not an initiative of the opposition, but of the citizens, and their continuation will be left in the hands of the citizens. / CNA
