How did the Armenian Genocide happen?

The genocide began on April 24, 1915, and coincided with the day when the Ottoman authorities arrested and deported from Constantinople some 270 Armenian intellectuals and community leaders, who were then executed.

The genocide was carried out during and after World War I and lasted from 1915 to 1923. During this period there was the systematic mass extermination and deportation of more than 1.5 million ethnic Armenians within the Ottoman Empire. They were deprived of food and water and subjected to periodic robberies, rapes and massacres.

The Armenian Genocide is an issue that creates debate even today. Most Armenians, Western intellectuals, and some Turks believe that the killing of Armenians was the result of a state plan for mass extermination, but some others think that Armenians died from conflict, starvation, and disease.

Even today there is no exact number for the loss of life, but the number of victims ranges from 200,000 to 1.8 million Armenians.

Turkey denies that the word genocide is an accurate term for these crimes, but in recent years it has been asked to recognize it as such. As of 2019, the governments and parliaments of 31 countries, including Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Russia, as well as 49 of the 50 states of the United States have recognized the events as a genocide./ CNA.al
