The goal that caused controversy, FIFA reveals how the offside position was discovered

The match between Croatia and Portugal at the 2026 World Cup ended in controversy after a goal for the Balkans was disallowed in the 103rd minute.

Croatia had taken the lead in the 53rd minute through Ivan Perisic, while Portugal equalized through Cristiano Ronaldo from the penalty spot. In the 94th minute, Gonçalo Ramos scored the goal that gave Portugal a 2-1 advantage.

In the 13th minute of extra time, Josko Guardiola put the ball in the net for Croatia, but the goal was disallowed after a VAR review. FIFA explained that the “Connected Ball Technology” system detected a touch of the ball by Igor Matanovic during the action.

This led to Mario Pasalic being ruled offside before the assist to Guardiola. Norwegian referee Espen Eskas also reviewed the footage for a tackle by Renato Veiga, but upheld the initial decision.
