Crack in the national team after the World Cup, the midfielder refuses to join the team with the current coach

Senegal was eliminated from the 2026 World Cup in the round of 16 after losing 3-2 to Belgium after extra time.

The African team built a significant 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr. Belgium responded in the final moments of regulation time, with Romelu Lukaku and Youri Tielemans equalizing to send the game into extra time.

The decisive goal came from the penalty spot, after Tielemans converted the penalty awarded after VAR intervention for a foul by Lamine Camaras.

The elimination also brought reactions off the field. Midfielder Pape Gueye, who scored two goals during this World Cup, announced that he would temporarily withdraw from the national team.

The 27-year-old announced that he would not be available for Senegal as long as the current coaching staff remains in place. His decision comes shortly after Senegal's tour of the continent concluded.
