Heat wave/ Everything we need to know about health care

Groups at highest risk during extreme heat include people over 65, infants and young children, pregnant women, people with acute or chronic medical conditions, and those who are socially isolated. However, we should not forget that heat waves can negatively affect each of us and we should take measures to stay safe.

So, what should we do?

-Use air conditioning if available, setting the temperature to 26–27?C. Fans can help when the temperature is below 39–40?C.

-Moisturize your skin with a splash of water or dampen a towel with cold water and wrap it loosely around your head.

-Take a cool shower or foot bath.

-Wear light and loose clothing.

-On the road, stop in air-conditioned buildings, such as shopping malls.

-Block bright sunlight in your home by closing curtains, blinds, so it doesn't turn into an oven, and open windows in the evening or very early in the morning to allow fresh air to enter.

Hydration

During extreme heat, don't wait until you're thirsty to drink water, especially if you're outside or exercising. If you need to limit your fluids, ask your doctor how much water you can drink.

Always carry a bottle of water with you when you go out. Recognize the signs of dehydration, such as thirst, dizziness, dry mouth, fatigue, decreased frequency of urination, etc.

Additional tips at home

-Turn off electrical devices that you are not using (e.g. TV, computer), as they produce heat.

-Place a bowl of ice cubes or ice water in front of the fan for instant coolness.

-Reduce movement and stress, excessive activity increases body temperature. Prefer activities such as reading, relaxation, or light stretching exercises.

-Take short breaks to hydrate even indoors.

-If you absolutely must go out, walk on the "shady side" of the road and use an umbrella or a wide-brimmed hat.

-Avoid coffee and alcoholic beverages because they increase dehydration. /CNA
