The Brain/ What is its superpower?

New research shows that the human brain has a superpower that artificial intelligence lacks. Researchers from the University of Amsterdam, in this new study, discovered unique brain activations that reflect the way we can move our bodies in an environment.

The study looked at what happens in the brain when participants looked at pictures of indoor and outdoor environments. This was done using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). According to the findings, participants pressed a button to indicate whether the image invited them to walk, ride a bike, drive a car, swim, or go boating, while their brain activity was measured at the same time.

The brain and its unique processes

The research team found that specific areas in the visual cortex were activated in a way that couldn't be explained by the objects seen in an image alone. These brain areas represent not only what is seen, but also what can be done with it. And this happened even when participants were not given explicit action instructions.

Brain vs. Artificial Intelligence

The study also compared the human brain's ability to do this and how artificial intelligence models estimate what we can do in a given environment.

The results showed that the computers performed worse than humans. In fact, the team reported that when artificial intelligence systems were specifically trained to recognize actions, they could approximate human judgments to some extent, but the patterns of brain activity did not match the models' internal calculations./CNA
