An almost common and often unconscious habit at the table, adding salt to food, can have serious consequences for our health. A British study shows that this daily habit significantly increases the risk of stomach cancer, by 41%.

The research was based on data from the UK Biobank, a large health database, and followed almost 200,000 people for 11 years. Participants were asked to answer how often they added salt to their food outside of cooking, with options ranging from "never/rarely" to "always."

At the same time, the researchers measured sodium levels to assess their current salt intake. The results were revealing: those who said they always added salt had a 41% higher risk of developing stomach cancer compared to those who avoided it or rarely did.

The study, published after analyzing the records of 471,144 volunteers from the UK Biobank, ultimately focused on about 198,000 people. Those with incomplete dietary or biological data were excluded to ensure the reliability of the results.

During the follow-up, 640 cases of stomach cancer were diagnosed. Although urinary sodium levels were not directly linked to risk, the habit of adding salt itself appears to be a risk factor.
