Depression: Can it be "transmitted" through kissing?

According to a new and groundbreaking study from Iran, couples exchange not only love and words, but also microorganisms and possibly mental health problems with them. The study, published in the scientific journal Exploratory Research and Hypothesis in Medicine, examined 1,740 newlyweds and came to an unexpected discovery: when one partner suffers from depression and anxiety, the other eventually develops similar symptoms and their oral microbiome begins to resemble their partner's in a dangerous way.

How oral bacteria are linked to depression

Oral bacteria are easily transmitted through kissing, sharing food, and simply being around each other. Most of these microorganisms are harmless, many are even beneficial. But this study suggests that some bacteria may be linked to mental health problems and can be "transmitted" between partners.

The researchers followed the newlyweds for six months. When one of them had already been diagnosed with depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders, the healthy partner gradually showed increasing levels of the same symptoms. The researchers also found changes in their oral microbiome: bacterial families such as Clostridia, Veillonella, and Lachnospiraceae, which have been linked to mood disorders, began to dominate in both.

The scientific community is increasingly studying the microbiome-brain connection, a relationship called the "microbiome-brain axis ." Microorganisms in our bodies appear to influence brain function, whether through chemical signals or by influencing the immune system and stress. /CNA
