The passing of former ambassador/Berisha: He was an advocate for Albanians and

The Chairman of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, through a status on social networks, reacted to the passing of former German ambassador, Werner Daum.

Berisha writes that former Ambassador Daum was a friend of Albania in its most difficult days.

The leader of the Democrat Party said that the former ambassador was an advocate for the culture of Albania and Albanian culture.

In closing his reaction, Berisha recalled his last conversation with the ambassador just a few days ago.

Berisha's status

The sun set for Werner Daum, Ambassador of Freedom.

Dear friends, the former first German ambassador after World War II to Albania, a great friend of Albania and the Albanian nation, Werner Daum, closed his eyes forever in his second homeland, Albania.

Ambassador Werner Daum was a distinguished friend of the most difficult days for Albania and the Albanians. In the years 1989–1990, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Werner Daum, representative of the great German nation, descendant of an anti-Nazi family imbued with a passion for freedom, did everything and more than anyone else to encourage the Albanians to rise up against the dictatorial communist regime and to follow the path of other oppressed former communist nations. With his direct contacts and meetings with courageous anti-communist groups in Shkodër, Kavajë, Tirana, etc., he provided invaluable assistance in encouraging the first anti-communist protests in Shkodër, Kavajë, Tirana in the first months of 1990.

But his activity for the freedom of Albanians culminated as the main promoter of the peaceful uprising of the Youth of Tirana on July 2, 1990. The embassy of his country, under his leadership, was transformed into the fortress of freedom of the 3800 young people who demolished the Berlin Wall in Tirana and filled it with insurgents on every corner. His goal was that the peaceful uprising of the 3800 young people who filled the embassy of the FRG and hundreds and hundreds of other young people who entered other embassies would be supported by the citizens of Tirana and thus overthrow the communist regime in Albania as well.

After this extraordinary action, which became the headline news of the world media, he was transferred from Albania and, unfortunately, Albanian society in those historical days could not get out of apathy. But despite this, the peaceful uprising of July 2, 1990, the main architect of which was Ambassador Werner Daum, would be the prelude to the democratic revolution of December 1990 that brought the overthrow of the communist dictatorship; therefore, he will always remain the Ambassador of Freedom for the Albanians.

After leaving Albania, a valued friend of Albanians and in particular of the greats Ismail Kadare and Martin Camaj, a scholar and intellectual of the German and French academic elite, Werner Daum would be an advocate for Albania, the Albanians, and their culture. He devoted precious time and energy to their promotion in Europe. He presented his love and respect for Albania, the Albanians, their culture, their identity, and their history in a series of studies, lectures, and exhibitions among the most successful ones dedicated to them.

For all his extraordinary contribution, the President of the Republic, Bujar Nishani, honored this distinguished man of the German nation with the "Naim Frashëri" Order, First Class. Meanwhile, the Mayor of Kavaja declared him an Honorary Citizen of the city on July 10, 2025.

I was lucky enough to meet him again on July 10, 2025 in Kavaja, on the 35th anniversary of the fall of the first hero of Albanian democracy, Josif Buda, whose funeral he had attended and whose memory he had come to honor. Two days ago I had a long conversation with the ambassador, which together with the memory of his brilliant work I will remember forever./ CNA
