"Democracy today requires more transparency, less arrogance"/ Ditmir

Are we living in the decade of populists? Is democracy endangered by new forms of political communication itself? These are just some of the questions that Ditmir Bushati asked in the latest episode of Public Square, where the well-known Romanian political analyst, Radu Magdin, was invited.

In an in-depth and direct conversation, Bushati and Magdin analyzed how recent elections in key countries such as Poland, Germany, Romania, and Albania have reflected not only global trends toward political polarization, but also an increasingly worrying influence of social networks and international actors on fragile democracies.

The conversation also included the Balkan dimension and concerns about foreign interference in elections, including the use of “MAGA”-style strategies by opposition forces in the region. Magdin emphasized that traditional respect for the US in Eastern Europe no longer automatically translates into electoral success, as voters have become more critical, more sensitive to digital manipulation, and more demanding of leadership.

Political support has always existed. There has been an impetus to look at regimes in Europe through elections, to see which one is more compatible with Donald Trump and MAGA in the US. Things are clearer with MAGA, in the sense that MAGA intervenes. Things have not changed in terms of global support, because it is normal for everyone to try to promote their own political family. We are moving from an audience democracy, where citizens were active through debate and public involvement, to a digital democracy where algorithms, emotions and clicks strongly influence our political choices. Democracy today requires more transparency, more communication, less arrogance and more listening to the citizen ”, said Magdin, emphasizing the crucial role of political education and resistance to digital extremism./ CNA
