Renowned doctor Vasil Llajo announced today his decision to become politically engaged, participating in the May 11 election race, as a candidate on the open list of the Socialist Party in the Vlora district.
Llajo says he considers this decision an opportunity for change. In a statement, Llajo says that although he had been in a dilemma about whether to engage in politics, after long reflection he decided to accept the challenge.
Llajo emphasizes that this is a decision that does not affect his profession, as he will not abandon medicine by entering politics.
"It was a difficult decision, because engaging in politics requires dedication and responsibility. However, I believe that it is the right moment to give my contribution to a field that is very close to me. Medicine remains my passion and I will continue to practice it. Politics will be an addition, not a replacement for my profession," said Llajo.
Speaking about the electoral race, Llajo made it clear that it is the citizens who will decide his political future.
"Ultimately, it is the electorate that decides. If they trust me to represent them, I will be there to serve them. If not, I remain their doctor, as I have always been," he stressed.
He underlined that it is not unusual for political parties to invite intellectuals and professionals to give their contribution to Parliament.
"Political forces always seek representatives with integrity and experience. It is no surprise that I was invited, but the decision to accept was mine," said Llajo.
An unchanged focus: Medical policy
Regarding his goals, Llajo emphasized that the main focus will remain health.
"I will not do politics for the sake of politics. My goal is to bring changes to the health system, to protect the interests of patients and my colleagues. I will not deviate from my professional principles," he said.
He also made it clear that politics for him is not a means of personal gain, but a step to make his contribution.
"This is a commitment to give, not to take. Politics should serve the good of citizens, not personal interests," the doctor said.
A difficult battle, but with a civic approach
Aware of the challenges that await him in politics, Llajo admitted that he will face criticism and attacks.
"I am aware that there will be mudslinging at me, but I will maintain a civilized approach. I will not engage in harsh rhetoric or pointless confrontations. I will defend my ideas with facts and arguments," he said.
He emphasized that he will be himself in this race and will not be influenced by the political leanings of others.
"It doesn't matter whether a political force is left or right. What matters is what we can do to bring about real development and change," he stressed.
Continued commitment to medicine
Llajo concluded his statement by emphasizing that, regardless of the election result, medicine will remain his main commitment.
"I am and will remain a doctor. This is my professional identity and I will not neglect it, despite my political engagement," he concluded./CNA
