Lawyer Brizida Gjikondi said today that the arrested mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, has held the institution and leadership of the capital hostage for months, while he has been in Durrës Prison since February. 

In a television appearance, Gjikondi stated that Veliaj should have resigned from the beginning.

Gjikondi added that the thread of morality in this matter should not have been used politically.

"I consider it a moral procedure, this has three perspectives, moral, political and legal. Veliaj must be aware that he has been in that position since the election of the SP and Rama, he should have resigned without giving a word to Berisha. The SP together with its Councilors is responsible for following this procedure. Veliaj has held the Municipality of Tirana hostage for these months. Tirana cannot be held hostage by any personal situation. We have seen that during these 7 months in Tirana the chaos of an ineffective governance is felt. I have said from the beginning that Veliaj should open his arms. Having politics as a refuge, I am a very ugly message and image. It was a message about how far from reality Albanian politicians are, who have lost every moral thread. He should not be used politically, especially his political family that brought him there. The Municipal Council demands the dismissal of Veliaj objectively. We must see what the right-wing group, which until now has remained at the door of the municipality, will do. "Veliaj should have resigned, but now they are coming to his defense. Now even the municipality itself as an administration has realized that a new era has begun. Veliaj's appeal may not even make it to the Constitutional Court," said Gjikondi./ CNA
