DP MP: Here's why Albania risks not having natural parks in the future

Democratic Party MP Ina Zhupa has reacted to the draft law on protected areas that has been sent for review to the Constitutional Court.

In an interview with the media, Zhupa said that this is a clientelist law and built to favor the interests of politics and oligarchs.

The MP states that with the new legal changes, approved in February 2024, Albania practically no longer has real protected areas, as control over them has been left to political power and the interests of some individuals.

"We risk having only hotels and resorts instead of protected nature," she said.

"Regarding the law on protected areas, it has been sent to the Constitutional Court and the fact that it has been accepted for review shows that there are problems in this lawsuit. We want to overturn the law. With this new law, Albania will no longer have practically any protected areas by February 2024. Practically, the protection area has been left to the appetites of politicians and oligarchs. Environmental protection is about better health and is part of a good life. National heritage must be protected and a healthy eco-system created. The Council of Ministers made this restriction. Albania risks not having protected areas, but we can have hotels and resorts.

Nature is a common property and not of a few individuals. There are also constitutional violations in the law. It is good news that the law is being discussed by the Court of Justice. But, considering that we live in Albania, it is a law that has millions of euros behind it and can influence the decision. There are money lobbies, the influence of political and economic power and the court has a lot of pressure. In a normal state, we would win the case 100 percent", she declared./ CNA
