DP MP in Strasbourg: I ??was threatened in broad daylight by criminals

DP MP Albana Vokshi stated at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe that during the May 11 elections she was threatened in broad daylight by criminals convicted of murder and drug trafficking.

Vokshi has called for an international investigation into the May 11 elections in Albania.

“Thank you for the Council of Europe observation mission during the May 11 elections in Albania, which provided a valuable view of the reality on the ground. The report raises serious concerns. But the truth is much more alarming. When the vote is not free, democracy does not exist!

There can be no double standards for EU member states and candidate countries like Albania. Therefore, I pose a few questions to you:

Can the elections be called democratic?

-When most of the Copenhagen criteria have been systematically and brutally violated?

-When are the state and the ruling party one?

-When civil servants, voters, and candidates are threatened – through patronage networks as well as by criminals with fake observer badges inside and outside polling stations – while the police turn a blind eye or intervene too late?

-When is the media under control?

A few weeks before the election, the Prime Minister approved 138 licenses for cannabis cultivation – 147 times the legal limit – covering 29,000 hectares, mostly in border areas. The ruling party saw a significant increase in votes in those regions. This is not a democratic contest – it is a threat to national security.

402 million euros of public funds were misused to buy votes and manipulate the result:

100 euro bonus for over 750,000 pensioners (or 42% of voters)

200 million euros in fines forgiven two days before the elections

jobs, subsidies, tenders and luxury events turned into means for more votes.

The vote was also bought with taxpayers' money.

I have participated in many elections. But I have never experienced what I saw this time.

In Vora, I was threatened in broad daylight by criminals convicted of murder and drug trafficking. My daughter was also threatened. Despite calls to the State Police and official reports to SPAK, no one took action. Those criminals are still at large, while I fear every day until the children return home.

Therefore I ask you again:

Are these elections free, when women candidates face cartels and not political parties?

I did not enter politics to bear arms – but to offer an alternative based on truth. And this right has been denied to me – due to the connections between high-ranking officials (Prime Minister, ministers) and organized crime.

Should I stay silent, calm but afraid? No. I will not be silent.

We must speak up – for our daughters, for our families, and for every woman who wants to serve without fear. If we don’t act, we hand over politics to those who are protected by crime – not by democracy. 28 candidates in 10 districts were supported by criminal groups and drug cartels. Over 20 of them will be in the next parliament. And they will probably be here in this hall. And I wouldn’t want that.

Therefore I call upon you:

To support a fact-finding mission in Albania. Meet all stakeholders. Assess criminal influence and failures in democratic standards.

I have submitted a short video for this plenary session - in the hope that you can see with your own eyes what these elections were really like, and anyone who wants to can send it.

"I call on every female MP here in this room: this will not be tolerated! We must stand by each other. Let's stand together to create an environment where women can do politics and serve their country with dignity," she declared./ CNA
