Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe/ Report on the May 11 elections

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe will meet on Monday in Strasbourg.

At the meeting, the report on the May 11 parliamentary elections in Albania will be discussed.

The report by the Council of Europe states that the parliamentary elections took place in a polarized environment and a topic that occupied an important place in the political discourse.

The report also stated that the May 11 elections were characterized by the extensive use of public resources and institutions by the ruling party.

" The parliamentary elections were held on 11 May in a highly polarized political environment. Membership in the European Union (EU) was a topic that occupied a prominent place in the political discourse, with the ruling Socialist Party (SP) campaigning for membership by 2030 and highlighting achievements in the negotiation process. However, opposition parties criticized the SP for using the rhetoric of EU integration as a way to distract attention from domestic issues such as living standards, corruption, and the decline of democracy.

The first-ever implementation of out-of-country voting in these elections was widely hailed as a significant achievement. Albania’s parliamentary elections were competitive and professionally managed, the authorities managed to meet the challenge of organizing out-of-country voting for the first time, and candidates were generally able to campaign freely. However, the elections were marked by the ruling party’s extensive use of public resources and institutional power, while numerous reports of pressure on public employees and other voters, as well as cases of intimidation, are of concern, international observers said in a statement today./ CNA
