"A normal aspect of democratic life"/ OSCE Ambassador speaks about

OSCE Ambassador Michel Tarran paid an unofficial visit to the city of Korça today.

In a statement following his visit, Tarran spoke at length about the anti-government citizen protests that have been taking place in the country for 41 days.

According to the ambassador, protests are a normal aspect of democratic life, and he described the rallies held over the past month as peaceful and with few incidents.

Tarran emphasized that the most important aspect is encouraging dialogue between citizens and the government.

"First of all, I must say that protests are a normal aspect of democratic life and I am very happy that Albania has now become a place where such protests can be organized.

Even in a very civil way, in a very peaceful way. There were some incidents but overall, if we look back over a month, there were no significant incidents.

And the people who go to protest do so in a civil manner, and this is, as I said, a very sympathetic, very good aspect of the democratic life of your country. As for the issues that the citizens who participate in these protests are concerned with or disagree with, it is certainly not my mandate to enter into this debate. I listen, I see, I understand, at least I try to understand what the demands are.

"We are just very careful that the rights of citizens to participate in these types of protests are respected by the government, and we encourage dialogue when possible," Tarran said./CNA
