"Beleri" as a symbol of the weakening of public debate

"Beleri" as a symbol of the weakening of public debate
Andi Bushati

If you analyze it detached from the tyranny of the moment, whether it is the destruction of justice, whether it is the normalization of processes with manipulated evidence, or the trivialization of the trial by political order, all together are the least damage of what the Beleri case proved to us.

The biggest cost is the weakening of the public debate, on a scale unimaginable ten months ago, when the minority opposition candidate for the municipality of Himara was imprisoned on the charge of vote buying.

From that day of May 12 until today, personally, I have participated in dozens of television debates, in various shows, but in none, absolutely none, have I managed to develop a normal conversation, where the concrete facts that are in against the accused are compared with the evidence in his favor.

Instead of this rational discussion, I have always found myself in front of nationalist cries, in front of conspiracies with Trojan horses, in front of parades and national flags.

The simple questions: is the imprisonment prompted by the personal threat of Edi Rama; was the witness, a paid police spy; have the records of permission to wiretapping been falsified; are the evidence obtained illegally valid; why there are no fingerprints on the corruption lek; why the court did not allow the confrontation of the witnesses, or why, now the convicted, he did not have the opportunity to neither hear nor see in the courtroom, the recordings for which he is in prison, always received hallucinatory answers.

They mainly consisted of three idiotic nebulae.

The first, that Fredi Beleri was a mask, who was convicted, who killed people, who burned our flag, who serves to seize the lands of Vorio Epirus from Greece.

Second, that the moment has come to break Athens' noses, that we have already become a strong NATO state, that we do not have to ask about the pressures of the Greek Prime Minister, nor about the rallies of the neighboring mayors on our land or for Athens' veto on EU integration.

Third, that we do not forget the genocide against the Chams, the kidnapping of their property even today, the countless violations against our immigrants, the forced name changes, not even the fact that Janina and Preveza are ours.

It was useless for anyone in this delirium to say that Beleri should be tried for all the previous charges, that he condemned the arrogant behavior of the Hellenic government, that he denounced the behavior of the Greek state towards the immigrants and the properties of the Chams, but that none of them it was not part of the case in question: the imprisonment with or without evidence of the minority candidate of the opposition.

The delirium of the television studios, where those who thought differently had water bottles thrown at their heads, spread like an epidemic in social networks where those who consumed alms soufflés from Athens were massacred, or in coffee shop conversations, where friends confidently said to friends: "Emo they did good to the shitty Greek".

In the space of a few months, a Laraman coalition of hardened revivalists, staunch Grecophobes, and pro-American supporters of the new justice succeeded in killing any rational debate about a judicial procedure. In an orchestrated way, they superimposed emotions on the facts, paranoia on the reality, nationalist hysteria on the debate on the evidence.

Therefore, I say with conviction, from what I have experienced as a witness in the television studios and from what I have followed from the screen, as a simple spectator, that the real damage of the Beleri process is not the drama that took place behind the glass cage where the accused was kept , in the courtroom, but what happened outside those walls.

The real carnage is that the strategy to weaken public debate succeeded. Perversion defeated free thought. The cacophony overwhelmed the thirst for truth.

Anyone who has read even a little about the decline and destruction of democracies easily understands that these are obvious signals of what is happening. This is exactly why I insist on the fact that the "Beleri process", even if his sentence is 200% unjust, constitutes a much smaller damage than what happened around him. Because in such an atmosphere, where paranoia overlaps with reality, even judges will find it easier, in the future, to give decisions without evidence.

Likewise, journalism will go towards the anomaly, where opinions will kill facts. So in situations where the public loses its orientation, all against the powers that be, they can more easily fall under the yoke of that politician. This is the real drama of the Beleri trial and therefore, it can be considered as a general proof of the dangerous phase we are entering.
