Study/ People sleep longer and dream more in winter
 
Temperature changes and the shortening of the day in winter make people sleep more in general and in particular in the REM stage where they dream, according to a new German scientific study.

The study shows that total sleep time was on average about an hour longer in winter than in summer.

Also, REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep time, when people tend to dream, was found to be 30 minutes longer in winter than in summer.

Normal sleep begins with successive stages of non-REM sleep followed by periods of REM sleep usually with breaks in between.

"Our study shows that human sleep architecture varies significantly from season to season in an adult population living in an urban environment. "In general, people have to adapt their sleep habits to the season, including their sleep duration and schedule, adjusting their school and work schedules to meet the sleep needs of each season," said German researcher Kuntz./ CNA .co.uk
