The realization of a thirty-year dream

Today, Wednesday, May 17, 2023, from the printing house of the "Onufri" publishing house, the first copy of Kadare's complete work came out, which will be presented tomorrow in the Albania hall at SALONE INTERNAZIONALE DEL LIBRO DI TORINO.

SEVEN DECADES OF CREATIVITY IN SEVEN VOLUMES

In the years 2007-2009, "Onufri" published in twenty volumes the entire creativity of Kadare until then. Fortunately for the reader, the preparation of the summary was carried out under the supervision of the author himself. Only a negligible part, mainly writings of early youth or creations that, according to his judgment, did not have the proper artistic quality, were left out of the column.

The idea for a new seven-volume version of the complete work was discussed precisely on November 28, 2012, when Kadareja browsed the personal archive for the first time, in his apartment in Tirana. Even the seventh volume was chosen by the author himself. Initially, it was thought that the entire work of twenty volumes would be summarized in six volumes, while the seventh would be the unpublished archive. But Kadareja was strictly selective with unpublished creativity, as he would express himself, somewhere, years later: "My novels had been something wrong, as long as they had been born outside the time allowed for literature."

Kadareja singled out a creation from the archive which he baptized as the genesis of his literary work. It was the novella "Në dheun e sekreja", which on the first page bears the date October 8, 1953, coinciding with this year with seven decades of the author's creativity. Since the chronological criterion has been followed for this publication, the first volume opens precisely with this novella.

With his first novel "Megullat e Tirana" and the creations of the last fifteen years, such as "Discord", "Breakfasts at Kafe Rostand (Motives of Paris)", "Dolls", "When the rulers quarrel", etc., this opus seven volumes is the most complete published to date and presents Kadare's creativity in its integral size, remaining forever the final and reference version for all subsequent publications in Albanian and foreign languages.

Gjatë tri viteve kur përgatitej kolana prej njëzet vëllimesh, ai lexoi kryekreje çdo libër të tij. Ndërkohë, në studion e tij, në kafenenë e preferuar, ndërsa ndjek nga afër ndryshimet, ndreqjet dhe përmirësimet që autori i shënon me dorën e tij mes rreshtave, në fund të tekstit apo anash faqeve të dorëshkrimeve të veprave të dikurshme, e ndihesh sikur ke qenë i pranishëm në kohën kur ato janë shkruar, para viteve nëntëdhjetë.

Një mrekulli krejt tjetër ka qenë procesi i botimit të krijimeve të reja të autorit. Përherë, pasi dilnim nga bar “Juvenilja”, ecnim në natyrë, në Parkun e Madh te kodrat e liqenit, ai niste të tregonte vijimin e subjektit, të cilin ende nuk e kishte hedhur në letër.

Si në një ëndërr, sheh si të shkasin nëpër gishtërinj grimca ari, po ashtu e ke të pamundur të fiksosh magjinë e fjalëve kur je ti i vetmi që po i dëgjon. Në ato orë të paharrueshme, sikur të mos ishin të kësaj bote, më pushtonte gjithmonë një ndjesi: sa do të doja t’ia përcillja në çast lexuesit gjithçka dëgjoja dhe përjetoja! Po si mund të arrihej kjo? Vërtet botuesi është një ndërmjetës midis autorit dhe lexuesit, por ai mund të bëhet edhe pengesë mes tyre.
