A fire that broke out near a military training base in the Kirovske district of the Crimean peninsula has forced the evacuation of more than 2,000 people and the closure of a nearby highway, Crimea's Russian-backed governor, Sergei Aksyonov, said on Wednesday.

"It is planned to temporarily evacuate residents of four settlements, more than 2,000 people," Aksyonov said on the Telegram messaging app.

He did not provide information on what caused the fire, which also forced the partial closure of the main Tavridy highway.

Russia's Telegram channels linked to Russian security services and Ukrainian media reported that an ammunition depot was burning after a Ukrainian airstrike overnight. Reuters news agency could not independently verify the reports. There was no immediate comment from Ukraine.

However, Serhiy Bratchuk, spokesman for the military administration of Odesa in Ukraine, posted two videos of a fire in an uninhabited area, and wrote: "Enemy ammunition depot in Stari Krim."

Stari Krim is a small historic town in the Kirovske district of Crimea. Russia illegally annexed the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine in 2014.

Videos and photos from social media showed huge flames and a smoky fire in an uninhabited area.

Several Telegram channels said that as of 07:30 local time, the fire had been spreading for around three hours, and was still not under control.

The fire comes two days after an explosion damaged the bridge linking Russia to the Crimean peninsula, killing two people, which Moscow blamed on Ukraine and prompted Russian President Vladimir Putin to vow retaliation.

Overnight, Russia launched an airstrike on the Ukrainian port of Odesa for the second night in a row.

Ukraine's military also said a drone attack in Kiev was successfully repelled on Wednesday morning./ Rel
