Belarus, Wagner's mercenaries are training the defense forces

The government in Belarus claims Wagner's fighters are training defense forces, as more mercenaries are reported to have moved into the country as part of a deal brokered by President Lukashenko.

Russian mercenaries of the Wagner Group are said to have entered Belarus as part of the deal that ended their insurgency.

The state-controlled TV channel Voen TV showed footage of Wagner fighters wearing black masks as they trained Belarusian soldiers.

The video showed mercenaries instructing Belarusian soldiers on how to shoot and provide medical aid.

The video has not been independently verified by journalists.

Wagner fighters "acted as instructors in a number of military disciplines," the Ministry of Defense announced on Telegram.

She noted that the training was taking place near the town of Asipovich, about 90 km (56 miles) south of the capital, Minsk, where a camp provided for Wagner is located.

The ministry did not report the number of Russian mercenaries who arrived in Belarus.

There are reports of over 100 vehicles bearing Russian flags and Wagner signs heading towards the camp.

President Alexander Lukashenko, who brokered a deal that ended last month's rebellion started by Wagner's boss Yevgeny Prigozhin, has said his country's military could benefit from the combat experience of mercenaries.

In Russia, Wagner's main base is being closed, according to a report on a Telegram channel linked to the paramilitary group.

Prigozhin ordered his mercenaries to return to their camps after they reached an agreement to end the rebellion in exchange for an amnesty for him and his men and permission to move to Belarus./ CNA
