Parliamentary elections in Portugal

Early general elections are being held in Portugal today. Voters are heading to the polls to choose whether to bring the center-right to power or continue to be governed by the center-left Socialists, although neither side so far appears to have the support to secure a majority.

The elections pit two central parties against each other, the Socialist Party (SP) and the Social Democratic Party (PSD).

The snap polls come four months after the surprise resignation of Socialist Prime Minister Antonio Costa amid a corruption investigation involving his chief of staff. No charges have been brought against Mr. Costa.

The populist party Chega (Enough) has seen an increase in support and is expected to play a key role in post-election talks in case the winning political force needs the support of smaller parties to form a new government.

Issues that have dominated the campaign in Western Europe's poorest country include low wages, corruption, the high cost of housing and restrictions on access to health care.

More than 10 million citizens have the right to vote today. The election results are expected to be announced at midnight.

The 46-year-old leader of the Socialist Party, Pedro Nuno Santos, candidate for prime minister, has promised change, but he has not distanced himself from senior party members who served in previous governments.

The chairman of the Social Democratic Party, 51-year-old Luis Montenegro, who can become prime minister if the Democratic Alliance wins, has declared that he will build a government with non-political figures.

The head of the Chega Party, Andre Ventura, campaigned by emphasizing the dissatisfaction of the voters while having the support of young people. The party, founded 5 years ago, secured a representative in the 230-seat parliament in 2019.

In the 2022 elections, it won 12 seats, and polls show that in today's elections it can get enough votes to double its representation in parliament./ VOA
