At the port of Larnaca in Cyprus, humanitarian aid for Gaza is being loaded onto a Spanish charity ship today, in what is expected to be the first shipment through a maritime corridor between Cyprus and Gaza.

On Friday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the maritime corridor could become operational as part of accelerating Western efforts to ease the humanitarian crisis in the war-torn Palestinian region.

The ship "Open Arms" is expected to leave for Gaza this Saturday.

"World Central Kitchen teams are in Cyprus loading pallets of humanitarian aid onto a ship bound for northern Gaza," the charity said in a statement on Friday.

In his State of the Union address on Thursday, President Joe Biden announced that he had asked the US military to build a temporary port off the coast of the Gaza Strip.

The Pentagon said on Friday that the construction of the temporary port may take 60 days and may require the deployment of 1,000 US personnel. Meanwhile, the delivery of humanitarian aid through air routes to Gaza continued today. The Jordanian military released humanitarian aid packages to the Gaza Strip, in cooperation with other countries, Egypt, the United States, France and Belgium.

The United Nations says Gaza's 2.3 million people are struggling to find food and more than 500,000 face starvation.

Meanwhile, hopes for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas before the month of Ramadan, which begins on March 10, appear to have faded.

Speaking to reporters in Pennsylvania yesterday, US President Joe Biden said it "looked difficult" to reach an agreement by Sunday.

The war in Gaza began after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, in which 1,200 people were killed and 250 hostages were taken, according to Israeli authorities.

According to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, which is controlled by Hamas, more than 30 thousand Palestinians have been killed as a result of the Israeli offensive./ Voa
