Russia and Ukraine shoot down dozens of each other's drones

Russia and Ukraine said they shot down dozens of drones overnight, as both countries carried out nighttime strikes on each other's targets behind front lines.

Drones - packed with explosives or with advanced surveillance cameras - have been used extensively during the two-year war between Russia and Ukraine.

The Air Force of Ukraine said that Russia shot down 37 kamikaze drones of the Shahed type - Iranian production - and three missiles on Ukrainian territory during the night.

"As a result of combat operations, 33 Shahed were shot down in the regions of Kirovograd, Odesa, Kherson, Mykolaiv and Kharkiv," the Air Force said in a Telegram post.

In Moscow, the Defense Ministry said it intercepted 16 Ukrainian drones in the early hours of Friday.

About 15 of them were destroyed over the southern Volgograd region, which is the closest region to the front lines in eastern Ukraine at a distance of about 300 kilometers.

Another drone was shot down over the border region of Belgorod, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

Belgorod has seen dozens of shelling and airstrikes since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Five people, including a three-year-old child, were injured in a Russian air strike overnight in the northeastern Ukrainian region of Kharkiv, governor Oleg Synegubov said. He published pictures of a number of shops whose windows were broken and footage showing a crater on a street next to a residential building./ REL
