Moscow organizes voting for Russian presidential elections in Donetsk

Today, Russia is holding early voting for presidential elections in the city of Donetsk, in the region it controls in eastern Ukraine.

In December 2023, the Central Election Commission of Russia announced the holding of presidential elections from March 15-17, which also includes voting in 4 regions of Ukraine, which Russia claims as its territory, since last year.

Ukraine has declared that votes for Russian elections in Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions will be invalid and has warned that it will legally pursue any observers sent to monitor the election process.

Moscow's ability to hold elections in what it describes as its "new territories" has political significance for the Kremlin.

But the process presents logistical and security challenges because Russian troops partially control the 4 regions.

Martial law is being implemented in the areas controlled by Moscow.

Russia's annexation of four regions in the east of Ukraine in September 2022 is considered illegal by Ukraine and most of the countries of the United Nations General Assembly./ VOA
