Lebanon's Hezbollah militant group said on March 10 that it fired dozens of rockets into northern Israel after Israeli strikes a day earlier killed five people in southern Lebanon, including three members of the group.

Hezbollah, an ally of Hamas – the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union – and an enemy of Israel has exchanged fire on an almost daily basis on the border with Israel since the Israel-Hamas war began on October 7.

Hezbollah said it fired "dozens of rockets" on Sunday morning at the Israeli village of Meron, located eight kilometers from the border.

Meron is home to a large air control base and Iran-backed Hezbollah has attacked the base several times since the beginning of this year.

Hezbollah said it acted "in response to Israeli attacks against villages in the south and civilian homes", specifically targeting the home of a Hezbollah fighter in Herbet Selm a day earlier.

A woman and another person were killed in the same attack, according to Lebanon's official news agency.

"Following the firing of sirens in northern Israel, approximately 30 rockets fired from Lebanon were identified in Israeli territory, a number of which were intercepted," the Israeli military said on Sunday.

The announcement added that the Israeli air force struck Hezbollah infrastructure overnight, including "a military facility in which Hezbollah terrorists were identified in the Hebert Selm area."

At least 312 people have been killed in Lebanon since cross-border violence began on October 8, mostly Hezbollah fighters, but also 53 civilians, according to data compiled by AFP.

On the Israeli side, ten soldiers and seven civilians have been killed, according to the latest official data.

Tens of thousands of people have been displaced by the fighting on both sides of the border./ REL
