Armenia considers the possibility of applying for EU membership

Armenia is considering applying for membership in the European Union, Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan said.

Armenia is aiming to forge closer relations with the West after tensions with its traditional ally, Russia.

"These days, many new opportunities are being discussed in Armenia, and it will not be a secret if I say that membership in the European Union is also included in them," said Mirzoyan during an interview for Turkish television, TRT World.

He made these statements on the sidelines of a diplomatic forum in the Turkish city of Antalya. Since coming to power in 2018, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian has deepened Armenia's relations with Europe and the United States and has repeatedly angered traditional ally Russia.

Yerevan has repeatedly said its alliance with Moscow does not extend to the war in Ukraine, while Pashinian has accused Russia of seeking to undermine his government.

Armenia also accuses Russia of failing to protect it against its bitter rival, Azerbaijan, which has deepened relations with Moscow in recent years./ Rel
