New Zealand will eliminate all feral cats by 2050

New Zealand has a plan to eliminate all feral cats in the wild by 2050 to protect biodiversity. The country's Environment Minister announced the news.

In a statement, Minister Tama Potaka announced the addition of feral cats to the pioneering global strategy "Predator-Free 2050". The initial plans were drawn up a decade ago and had sparked strong reactions from animal rights activists.

It is estimated that more than 2.5 million feral cats roam New Zealand. They can grow up to a metre long, including their tails, and weigh up to 7kg.

"They have devastated wildlife in many areas, driving some species to the brink of extinction. They are cold-blooded killers," Potaka said in a statement.

Domestic cats, which are not included in the program, are also considered a serious threat to biodiversity. The issue has sparked heated debate in a cat-loving country with one of the highest rates of domestic cats in the world but unclear rules on their ownership. /CNA
