Russia has created more artificial intelligence-assisted content to influence the US presidential election than any other foreign power, as part of its broader effort to help Republican candidate Donald Trump in the race against Democratic rival Kamala Harris, a US intelligence official said Monday.

The official from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, speaking on condition of anonymity, made the comments at a press conference on allegations of the use of artificial intelligence by Russia and other countries to influence the Nov. 5 election.

The AI-generated content from Moscow is "consistent with Russia's broader efforts to strengthen the position of the former president (Trump) and discredit the Vice President (Harris) and the Democratic Party, including the use of conspiracy theories." , he said.

Russia has previously denied allegations of meddling in the US election.

The US intelligence agency official said Russia is creating more AI content to influence the US election than any other country, but did not give a figure for the volume of AI content Moscow has produced so far.

"Russia is much more sophisticated in the field of operations to influence another country's political processes in general," the official said, adding that Moscow understands better than other rivals of the United States the process of American elections and states in target of its influence operations.

China has used artificial intelligence in efforts to influence how it is perceived around the world, but not to influence the outcome of the election in the United States, the official said.

"Beijing is using artificial intelligence in wider-reaching operations aimed at creating more positive global views of China and deepening political divisions in the US," the official said. "We have yet to see China use artificial intelligence for any specific operation aimed at changing the results of the US election."

Iranian groups have used artificial intelligence to create posts on social media platforms and "write fake news articles for websites that resemble real news portals," the official said.

The publications created by the Iranian groups are in English and Spanish and are aimed at American voters "across the political spectrum on polarizing issues" such as Israel, the Gaza conflict and presidential candidates, the official said.
