The UN expresses concern that the conflict in the Middle East is going "to

The United Nations has sounded the alarm over escalating violence between Israel and Hezbollah - the Lebanese group designated a terrorist organization by the United States - in Lebanon, warning that the actions and rhetoric are taking the conflict in the Middle East to "another level".

"We are very worried, very worried about the escalation in Lebanon," Ravina Shamdasani, spokeswoman for the UN human rights office, told AFP.

"The attacks we have seen on communication equipment, pagers, after rocket attacks and exchange of fire between the parties constitute escalation," she added.

According to Shamdasani, the UN has long warned that the conflict could turn into a regional conflict, and "it seems that both the actions and the rhetoric of the parties to the conflict are taking the conflict to the next level."

Since the war in Gaza began between Israel and Hamas - the Palestinian group designated as a terrorist organization by the US and the European Union - Israel and Hezbollah have exchanged fire on a daily basis along the border.

But tensions have escalated recently, and Lebanon on September 23 reported more than 180 people killed and over 400 wounded by Israeli airstrikes.

Israel said it hit more than 300 Hezbollah targets in dozens of strikes.

The deadly attacks come after 39 people were killed and almost 3,000 injured last week after explosions targeted communications equipment used by Hezbollah. For these attacks, the Lebanese group has blamed Israel, but Israel has not commented on the attacks./ REL
