Russian official: Nuclear tests depend on US behavior

Russia will not conduct nuclear tests as long as the United States refrains from such tests. This is what Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said, according to the Russian news agency TASS.

Last week, Russian state newspaper Rossiyskaya Gazeta published an interview with Andrei Sinitsyn, head of Russia's Novaya Zemlya nuclear plant, saying the plant is ready for full-scale testing.

Ryabkhov said that the preparations in Novaya Zemlya were undertaken in response to similar actions taken by the US.

Finally, Russian officials have repeatedly threatened to use nuclear weapons if the West allows Ukraine to use Western weapons to strike deep inside Russian territory.

Also, last week, the Russian MFA warned Ukraine - with which it has been at war since 2022 - and the US that if they provoke Belarus, they will face "catastrophic consequences".

Belarus has provided logistical support to Russia since Moscow launched its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Since then, Moscow has moved tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus – the first such move outside of Russia since the fall of the Soviet Union./ REL
