Montenegro, domestic violence and the role of society and institutions

At the table with the theme "Together to zero tolerance to violence against women", organized by associations for the protection of women's and children's rights, it was emphasized that violence against women has increased in Montenegro, causing serious and long-term consequences such as for the victims as well as for society as a whole.

In Montenegro, violence against women and the family has increased, causing serious and long-term consequences for both the victims and society as a whole, it was said at the table on the topic "Together to zero tolerance of violence against women" organized by the association "SOS phone" in Ulcinj.

The director of this organization, Hatixe Nelaj, said that violence against women and the family marked a noticeable increase in the Municipality of Ulcinj, where the victims, in most cases, are young girls.

The general director of the "SOS telefoni" organization in Podgorica, Mrs. Bilana Zekovic, points out that thousands of cases of violence against women are registered in Montenegro every year, where the lack of protection mechanisms keeps them in the vicious circle of violence.

"If the system and institutions are more efficient and react to domestic violence in the right way, then the violence would also decrease and it would not remain in the vicious circle", said Mrs. Zekovic.

Ms. Zekovic believes that the role of the media in raising society's awareness is special and that the media should serve as a partnership not only with civil society, but also with institutions.

At the table "Together until zero tolerance to violence" it was said that in the small state of Montenegro, only during the year 2023, 454 criminal offenses were registered to the detriment of 517 victims and 1,562 requests were submitted for the initiation of the procedure for offenses against 1313 authors./ VOA
