US sends additional troops to Middle East

The United States is sending additional troops to the Middle East in response to increased violence between Israel and Lebanon — the Lebanese group designated a terrorist organization by Washington — that has raised the risk of a wider regional war, the Pentagon said on September 23.

Pentagon spokesman Pat Ryder did not provide details on how many additional troops would be sent or what their duties would be. The US currently has close to 40,000 troops in the region.

"In light of rising tensions in the Middle East and out of an abundance of caution, we are sending a small additional number of US military personnel to augment the number of our forces already in the region. But for reasons of operational security, I can't comment or give specifics," Ryder said.

The new deployment comes after airstrikes by Israeli forces on targets inside Lebanon have killed hundreds of people and as Israel prepares to carry out other operations. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, through a video message on Monday, warned Lebanese civilians to evacuate their homes ahead of new airstrikes. The message was released as Israeli warplanes continued to attack suspected Hezbollah targets in southern and eastern Lebanon.

Meanwhile, the US State Department has called on Americans to leave Lebanon, as the risk of a regional war is growing.

"Due to the unpredictable nature of the ongoing conflict between Hezbollah and Israel and the recent explosions throughout Lebanon, including in Beirut, the US Embassy urges US citizens to leave Lebanon while commercial options are still available," DASH said. on Saturday.

Ryder did not say whether the additional forces could support the evacuation of American citizens who want to leave Lebanon./ REL
