EU, complaint against China in the World Trade Organization

The European Commission has started complaint procedures at the World Trade Organization (WTO), against an investigation that China has started on dairy products of the European bloc. The investigation began after the EU imposed new tariffs on imports of Chinese electric cars.

This is the first time that the European Union takes such a measure at the beginning of the investigations, without waiting for their conclusion and whether or not they result in the imposition of measures against the bloc.

"The EU's action was prompted by China's new tendency to initiate protectionist trade measures on unsubstantiated claims and insufficient evidence within a short period of time," the Commission said.

Procedures in the WTO begin with a mandatory 60-day period of consultation between the parties. The commission said it would ask the WTO to set up an adjudication panel if consultations did not lead to a satisfactory solution.

WTO commissions usually take more than a year to reach conclusions.

China launched its investigation against EU subsidies for its dairy products on August 21, targeting milk, other fresh by-products with a fat content of more than 10% and various types of cheese.

The Commission said it was convinced that the EU's milk subsidy schemes are fully in line with international rules and do not harm the Chinese dairy sector.

The European Union imposed temporary tariffs in July on electric vehicles made in China. EU member states are expected to vote soon on the final tariffs, which will apply for five years.

China is also conducting ongoing investigations against EU cognac and pork./ VOA
