Mayor shot dead in southern Mexico

The mayor of San Miguel Amatitlan, a town of about 7,000 residents in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, has been killed by gunmen.

According to the Oaxaca State Prosecutor's Office, the victim, Joel Angel Bravo Martinez, was the victim of an armed attack. Authorities have not yet provided further details about the circumstances of the incident.

The area where the attack took place is known for the activity of criminal groups, which constantly clash for control of drug trafficking routes.

Oaxaca Governor Salomon Jara strongly condemned the mayor's murder, calling it a grave act of violence. In a public statement, he stressed that authorities will not allow violence to prevail over the law and the will of local communities.

The prosecutor's office announced that the presence of security forces in the area has been increased and that joint operations are underway with federal authorities to identify and arrest the perpetrators.

The state of Oaxaca is home to some of the most powerful drug cartels in Mexico, including the Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco Nueva Generacion Cartel.

Violence against local officials remains a serious problem in Mexico. Since 2006, when the government declared war on drug cartels, almost 100 mayors have been killed in the country.

Another case that shocked public opinion was the murder of Carlos Manzo, mayor of Uruapan in the state of Michoacan, in November last year, which sparked protests in several regions of Mexico. /CNA
