"We appreciate Trump's efforts to stop World War III"/ Putin:

Russia congratulates Donald Trump on taking office as US president and welcomes his announced intention to resume contacts between the two countries, Vladimir Putin said during a meeting of the country's National Security Council on Monday.

"We are hearing statements by the newly elected US president and members of his team about the desire to restore direct contacts with Russia, which were severed by the outgoing administration.

"We also hear and appreciate his statement about the need to do everything to prevent the Third World War," Putin said.

"Of course, we welcome such a stance and congratulate the US president-elect on taking office."

Moscow has never "refused dialogue" with Washington and has always expressed readiness to deal with any US administration. Russia remains committed to its principles and believes that dialogue should be built on "equal and mutually respectful grounds," Putin said. /CNA
