Which European countries have taken measures to combat rising oil prices?

France has become the latest European country to take strong measures to protect consumers from rising oil prices following a surge in attacks around the Strait of Hormuz.

Some French fuel distributors have agreed to price caps and others have agreed to reduce prices per liter by 10 to 30 euro cents, the French Finance Ministry announced.

Prices have risen sharply after Iran launched retaliatory strikes following US-Israeli strikes almost two weeks ago, driving up energy costs and significantly increasing home heating oil bills.

European countries have already taken steps to reduce prices or are considering such measures:

United Kingdom : Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the government would not hesitate to intervene and impose regulations if companies cheat customers due to higher oil prices;

EU:  EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the bloc's executive was examining options such as better use of power purchase agreements, state aid measures and subsidizing or capping the price of gas;

Germany  plans to limit gasoline price increases at gas stations to once a day and introduce stricter antitrust regulations for the sector;

Greece  has imposed controls on the prices of fuel and basic household goods, limiting profit margins largely to 2025 levels;

Italy:  Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said her government is considering the possibility of recovering profits from speculation through higher corporate taxation. /CNA
