Hora Sadat was a woman who had built a large audience on YouTube by making videos about life in Afghanistan.
Even after the Taliban took power in 2021, the 25-year-old continued to generate multimedia content for her more than 300,000 followers, despite the militant group's efforts to eradicate women from public life.
Last week, Sadat's social media accounts went silent. She is believed to have been poisoned to death after attending a private event in the Afghan capital, Kabul, on August 21. The Taliban said they have arrested two people - a man and a woman - in connection with her death.
And while the motives behind the suspected poisoning are unclear, her death has had a chilling effect on women who are online and social media personalities who continue to be active in Afghanistan.
Speaking to Radio Free Europe's Radio Azadi, several women who post content on YouTube, who spoke on condition of anonymity for security reasons, said they fear for their lives and have stopped their online presence.
"Any woman who works in the media, is active in social life or appears on social media faces extreme threats," Shakeela, who asked that her real name not be published, told Radio Azadi.
Shakeela said that she no longer makes videos in public and now makes videos only in her home where she feels safe. But, she no longer shows her face in videos. "Because of fear, I can't even tell my neighbors that I have a YouTube channel anymore," said Shakeela, who lives in Kabul.
Only a few young Afghan women with YouTube channels have continued their activity under Taliban rule, which is waging a brutal crackdown on dissent.
Many social media personalities, including men, have avoided criticizing the Taliban or commenting on their policies. They are focused on showcasing Afghan culture and natural beauty. Despite its apolitical nature, online content has shed light on Taliban rule in Afghanistan.

"The message being sent to women and girls is that if you face violence or threats, the Taliban administration will not offer you any help: you are on your own," said Heather Barr, women's rights director at Human Rights Watch. "Women have every reason to fear for their safety"./REL
