Hurricane Idalia strengthens as it approaches Florida

Florida residents living in at-risk coastal areas have been ordered to evacuate as Hurricane Idalia strengthens in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

Experts say that the heavy rains expected to accompany the storm will be life-threatening. Millions of residents could be affected by Hurricane Idalia as it races toward the coast.

Authorities have ordered evacuations in parts of Florida. Similarly, parts of the state of Georgia and South Carolina have been warned about the risk of being affected by the hurricane.

Idalia strengthened to a Category 2 hurricane Tuesday afternoon with winds reaching speeds of up to 100 miles per hour. The hurricane is expected to make landfall early Wednesday morning as a Category 3 storm with sustained winds of up to 200 kilometers per hour, hitting the sparsely populated Big Bend region first.
