US lawmaker Steve Scalise is diagnosed with a rare cancer

Steve Scalise, the second most powerful Republican in the US House of Representatives, has announced that he is being treated for cancer.

The House Majority Leader said he had been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a blood cancer.

"I look forward to working through this period and intend to return to Washington," the Louisiana lawmaker said.

Scalise said in a statement Tuesday that "after a few days of not feeling like myself last week, I had some blood work done." "The results revealed some irregularities, and after undergoing additional tests, I was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a blood cancer," he said.

Currently, he is the right-hand man of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, and his job is to keep the conservative majority of the chamber in line./ CNA
