Thousands of air passengers have experienced long delays and cancellations after a "technical problem" hit UK air traffic control systems.

People have been stranded in the UK and abroad as the National Air Traffic Services restricted the number of planes landing.

There have been warnings that some outages could last for days.

Heathrow said late on Monday evening that schedules remained significantly disrupted, adding that people traveling on Tuesday should contact their airline before leaving for the airport.

Gatwick Airport said it was planning to operate as normal on Tuesday, but advised passengers to check the status of their flight with their airline before heading to the airport.
